The podcast that stood out to me this week is about gut health on Whoop with Dr Megan Rossi. Here are some parts that I found interesting.
“How do you define a healthy gut?”
“Someone who is not getting sick all the time, someone who’s got a strong mental health, someone who isn’t having digestive upset, someone who sleeps really well, someone who’s able to deal with stress effectively.”
“How do I know if I’ve got a healthy gut?”
“Unlike kidney function, heart function, where we’ve been able to come up with, a marker essentially, we haven’t gotten there with gut microbiome for two reasons. One is that it’s still new. But also the fact that it is very complex. The gut is more central in terms of its ability to influence every other organ.”
“I think we can be led astray by a lot of the commercial tests on the market.”
“Everyone’s got their own unique microbiome. So if you treat yours well through the diet, through the sleep, through the de-stressing, through the exercise of the pillars of gut health, then actually you’re gonna have your unique combination that will then be super resilient, look after you, help you perform at your best.”
“What does that diet actually need to look like? And what are the basic principles?”
“People who eat more different types of plants seem to have better gut health than those who eat the same 10 on repeat. I think a lot of people are starting to hear this concept of plant diversity.”
“So if you just ate loads of blueberries, you’re only going to feed the gut bacteria that like blueberries.”
“What are the super six food plant-based food groups?”
“Have I had something from the super six today? Legumes, veg, fruit, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and herbs and spices.”
“So instead of every morning having your blueberries, switch it up with your three berry mix. Instead of just picking your pumpkin seeds, get your four seed mix. So it’s actually things that super easy to switch in, not taking an extra time or cost, but actually it’s going to fertilize more different microbes, which will give you more skills and more functionality.”
The podcast goes on to discuss many other topics that relate to gut health, including supplements, food additives, sleep, breathing, stress, medication, exercise and chewing!
